In Nathan's experiment he was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In this project the student urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination for the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide" for the following good reasons:

Dihydrogen monoxide:

  • Is called 'hydroxyl acid', the substance is the major component of acid rain
  • Contributes to the 'greenhouse effect'
  • Is fatal if inhaled
  • Contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape
  • Accelerates corrosion and rusting or many metals
  • May cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes
  • Has been found in excised tumours of terminal cancer patients

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

  • as an industrial solvent and coolant
  • in nuclear power plants
  • in the production of Styrofoam
  • as a fire retardant
  • in many forms of cruel animal research
  • in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
  • as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products

He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical. 43 said yes. 6 were undecided. 1 knew that the chemical was water. The name "Dihydrogen Monoxide" is consistent with the basic rules of chemical non-clemature used for labelling of products including skincare products. Who would have known it was water?

We are sharing this TRUE experiment with you as Body & Soul have this last weekend called for making it easier for consumers to know what really is in your cosmetics and sited Pod Puraceuticals as an example of a company which has made it easier. This TRUE experiment was really the inspiration for us introducing our tell all labels. Read the article in our press gallery!
